The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.
Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon this year.
Athletes are granted the option to contest specific calls made by the official, echoing the protocol currently in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This development arrives only a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.
Case in Point
An illustrative incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
This technology are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.
Further Updates
Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.
Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
