The Video Platform Grants Viewers Authority to Limit Artificial Intelligence-Made Media in Personal Streams

The platform is rolling out a new feature that allows them to lessen the amount of AI-made media appearing in their streams. This initiative comes as the platform revealed that it now features in excess of 1 bn AI-generated clips.

Testing and Rollout

The update is undergoing trials over the coming weeks before a global release. This shift coincides with a rise in AI content, driven by recent video-generation tools.

AI Content on Other Platforms

It has been noted that approximately 10% of the quickest rising video streams on another major platform only show content made by AI. A large amount of this material is deemed low-quality AI content, a term for substandard, mass-produced content that is typically absurd or surreal.

“We know from our community that numerous viewers enjoy content created using AI tools, ranging from computer-generated images to science explainers, and we want to offer the community the ability to adjust the amount of that, depending on their own choices,” said a company executive.

AI on the Platform

The platform disclosed that there are now 1.3bn videos on its network identified as made with AI. In total, over 100 m videos are added to the app each day, making AI content a limited percentage of its total content library.

How to Adjust Settings

Members will be in a position to limit or boost the volume of AI-generated videos they see by accessing the topic control feature in the platform and selecting “AI-generated content”. Additional categories that are already be adjusted under the filter encompass current affairs, clothing, aesthetics, and choreography.

Content Labeling and Policies

Its policies require content makers to identify lifelike artificially created content, and it prohibits dangerous AI impersonations of well-known individuals or critical incidents. Any authentic-looking artificial content that is without a tag can be removed under its user guidelines.

Additionally, the app will henceforth apply an AI-generated label to content created with its proprietary AI systems, or flagged by an industry-wide initiative for spotting AI-generated material. This step is designed to deter users from attempting to circumvent the labeling process.

AI Literacy Programs

The company is also introducing a two million dollar awareness program for experts and groups to develop learning resources about ethical AI use. This program will support non-profit groups specializing in training computer science.

Platform Protection

The video-sharing app has justified its safety measures, during discussion over proposals to make redundant hundreds of review team members in the UK. TikTok is planning to cut 439 jobs in its content moderation department in the UK capital, with worker representatives and digital protection specialists expressing worry that people are being substituted by machine-led review.

A company official stated that staff-based oversight would still have a role, but AI can protect employees by filtering out the most graphic content ahead of it is viewed by people. The company announced a significant reduction in shocking and graphic content reviewed by safety staff over the last 12 months due to the use of its AI tools.

“We think that it’s essential to balance humans and technology to ensure user safety,” the official commented. “We’ll have staff as part of that process, but we also think it’s very important to limit contact with unsafe media as quickly as possible, which is where a lot of the machine support is proving valuable process content quickly.”
