Tetris Couldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

As any major awards ceremony draws close, one notices an outcry to include of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and delight the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer has already made for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are board games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. However, it represents a necessary evil for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types actually cover many game types, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely during that awards season
  • Another creative title missed out that year
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment that year
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're modest productions, however the design in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most popular titles globally and have been for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with well-known building titles claiming status as most purchased experience; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay decades.
